In the midst of news surround Aretha Franklin’s declining health, I was particularly interested in her contributions to music. Dubbed the ‘Queen of Soul,’ Franklin’s lengthy career has inspired most if not all of your favorite artists.
The Detroit native got her start as a gospel singer, going on to become a musical icon with a career spanning decades. The first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as 18 Grammy’s under her belt, there is a reason why Franklin is revered as one of the greats.
Commercially well known for her ‘feminist’ and groundbreaking anthem R-E-S-P-E-C-T, Franklin has always stayed true to her gospel roots. Finding her niche between gospel, soul, and rock and roll, Franklin left a great stamp among the black advancement movements in the 60s lending her voice to the Civil Rights Movement. Progressing through the following decades, Franklin continued to release music, having just released an album ‘A Brand New Me’ in 2017.
At the top of the year, Missy Elliott tweeted about celebrating our musical legends while they are still with us. Following suit, we give Aretha Franklin her flowers while she can still smell them and celebrate every contribution she has made to music and society.
My prayers are with Aretha Franklin & her family during this difficult time 🙏🏾 LOOK BELOW @ what I tweeted at the top of the year we MUST CELEBRATE the Living Legends while they are here to see it. So many have given us decades of Timeless music…❤️ https://t.co/VVacLxcMSI

Surrounded by family and friends in her hometown of Detroit, many are sending well wishes to the ‘Queen of Soul’ including Beyonce and Jay-z who dedicated their Detroit performance of their OTRII tour to Franklin. Updates on Franklin’s health are sparse, but the love and respect that she demanded and deserve can be felt around the world.
