The History of the Black Vote

Part 1 of the series "How African American Suffrage Shaped a Nation"

Amber Johnson

Feature Writer at RYSE
Amber Johnson is an aspiring filmmaker, human rights activist, freelance writer and avid day dreamer. She looks forward to a world without injustice, poverty and bad hair days.

With the 2016 elections just around the corner it is important to recognize that our liberty was born on the backs of others, that the privilege to vote resulted from years of struggle. Today we celebrate the brave activists that came before us and recognize the power of the black vote.

RYSE Magazine will be releasing an article every week profiling the struggle for African American voting equality and its subsequent impact on American politics in honor of Black History Month.
