All little black girls remember learning about Madam C.J. Walker during Black History Month. You know the first female millionaire, the creator of the relaxer and other hair care products. Madam C.J. Walker was an icon to me; an entrepreneur who reached into her community through beauty and empowerment. If anyone has ever been self-made, its Madam C.J. Walker. Our influential modern-day storyteller, Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures, The Help) will lend her talents to telling the story of Walker with a short series on Netflix.
Not missing a beat when it comes to content from black creators, Netflix is becoming the go-to hub for black artists. The Academy-Award winner’s portrayal is based on her great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundle’s biography On Her Own Ground.
The series will show Madam C.J. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove’s life of rivalries, multiple marriages, family battles, and success. The blueprint of black female entrepreneurship stems from Walker’s victory within the beauty industry. LeBron James will serve as an executive producer to the eight-part series; with Spencer’s magnetic performance, the series is sure to be a hit. Although a release date has not been set for the series, make sure to hold on to your friends Netflix password just in case!
