The UK division of MTV cited Kim Kardashian as the founder of the cornrow trend, calling them “boxer braids”.
MTV UK posted an image of Kardasian to their Twitter account sporting cornrows with the caption: “The A- List are loving boxer braids right now, so here’s an easy way to do them yourself.”
Some would call this a form of flattery or simply the latest addition to cultural appropriation. Cornrows have been a hairstyle worn by women, specifically Black women for centuries. There’s a difference in showing appreciation for another culture and failing to understand the nuances that helped construct that culture. Mainstream media has glorified different aspects of culture making them unique, while omitting their significance.
