With one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, actress and comedian Leslie Jones of Ghostbusters should feel on top of the world. Unfortunately, her time in the spotlight is being overshadowed by racist messages sent to her on Twitter.
On Monday, Jones took to Twitter to speak out against the online harassment she has endured since the movie premiered on the 15th.
Many of the messages sent refer to Jones as a gorilla and show many pop culture and recent news events such as the Spongebob episode that featured a gorilla and the Ohio gorilla that was shot after a child fell into its enclosure. Other refer to her as the n-word and call her a “big lipped coon”.
In a series of tweets the actress voiced her feelings over the messages. Below are a few:
I use to wonder why some celebs don't have Twitter accts now I know. You can't be nice and communicate with fans cause people crazy.

I'm not stupid to not know racism exists. And I know it will probably live on way after me. But we have to make people take responsibility

Many fans of the actress encouraged their own followers to report the harassers.
None of Jones’s costars fellow SNL costar Kate McKinnon, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and Chris Hemsworth (all white) have done anything to defend her despite Kate McKinnon publicly talking about how much she loves Jones.
One thing that many have found to be quite shocking is the fact that Twitter has done absolutely nothing to stop her harassers despite this being a violation of Twitter.
At the time of this article’s publishing Twitter has still ceased to delete some of the accounts.
