- Comedian Leslie Jones Ignored by Designers For Red Carpet Dress
Designers turned her down because she does not 'Fit' the standard Hollywood stereotype- July 5, 2016
Actress and Comedian Leslie Jones has made a name for herself in the past year and a half by becoming a regular on Saturday Night Live. Her followers of social media were not amused, however, when Jones brought to attention her experience with famous fashion designers. Late Tuesday night, Leslie Jones tweeted about certain designers not wanting to help her with a dress for the premiere of the Ghostbusters movie.
She reached out to multiple designers and never heard a response, leaving one to believe it is mainly because of her plus size. Because of her tweet, her followers retweeted and sent her complaints out to international fashion accounts, which indeed gained plenty of feedback and traction.
It was not long before fashion designer Christian Siriano, who first gained attention after winning the fourth season of American design competition show Project Runway, responded to Leslie Jones by offering to personally customize a dress for her red carpet premiere. Though Siriano did assist Leslie Jones with her current problem, she wanted to put the designers who turned her down on blast. No one from the fashion industry cared to comment on the crude behavior of their companies, though Jones did hint at some.
This continues to be an issue for women who are considered “plus size” in society today. What Leslie Jones went through would be defined as “fat shaming”, considering that none of the top designers wanted to work with her because of her larger size. It is difficult for women who don’t fit the stereotypical model size to excel in Hollywood. One day, all fashion lines will expand their boundaries and accept everyone.
