Beyoncé took home the CFDA Fashion Icon Award last night at the annual CFDA awards.
The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) is a nonprofit association that helps to increase the success of American designers across the globe. Diane von Furstenberg, who owns her own fashion house is the current president. She later presented the Fashion Icon Award to Beyoncé ,who was not spotted until she accepted her award.
She wore an embellished Givenchy suit. The fashion house is a favorite of the singer; she also wore Givenchy at the Met Gala the last three years and 2012.
She also gave the house a shout out in her song “Formation” in the line “I’m so reckless when I rock my Givenchy dress.”
In her acceptance speech she said,
“I feel so much love and I feel so proud. As long as I can remember, fashion has been part of my life. Its effect on me actually started before I was born. Many of you guys don’t know this, but my grandmother was a seamstress. My grandparents did not have enough money. They could not afford my mother’s Catholic school tuition. So my grandmother sewed clothes for the priests and the nuns and made the uniforms for the students in exchange for my mother’s education. She then passed this gift down to my mother and taught her how to sew.”
Past winners of the Fashion Icon Award were Rihanna, Iman, Pharrell Williams, Johnny Depp, Lady Gaga, Kate Moss, and Sarah Jessica Parker.
The singer has had her own apparel lines called House of Deréon, with her mother Tina Knowles Lawson, and the newly released Ivy Park.
