The 17-year-old has always been a vocal participant of conversations about racism and sexism.

Amandla Stenberg recently shared that she’s been cast in the lead role for a film inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. The movie, “The Hate You Give”, is based on a young adult novel by Angela Thomas. Stenberg will take on the role of 16-year-old Starr – which is a perfect fit, given that Stenberg has always been vocal about her feelings on cultural appropriation and racial tension in America – and she was excited to share the news on Instagram.

Thomas’ debut novel got its title from Tupac Shakur’s T.H.U.G [Life] tattoo. After closely following the story of 22-year-old Oscar Grant, killed by police in Oakland, California in 2009, Thomas was inspired to create what began as a short story during her senior year at Belhaven University. Becoming popular with publishing houses in February, the book is expected to be released in spring 2017.
