Every beautiful woman is not as slender as model Cindy Crawford. Similarly, every man does not have a defined like model Adam Nicklas’. With that being said, there have been more public efforts for female body positivity than for male body positivity. IMG Modeling Company is here to change that.
The company recently opened a new division that has the sole focus of signing on plus-sized male models. The first of these of new hires, reported by Women’s Wear Daily, is the charming and handsome Zach Miko. Hiring more plus-sized men isn’t the only change IMG seeks to make: rather than referring to these men as “plus-sized models” or even “big and tall” the company is adopting the new term “brawn model”. IMG President Ivan Bart claims that “Brawn has a body positive message. Brawn is physical strength.”
Plus-sized female models like Kaela Humphries, Fluvia Lacerda, and Candice Huffine are emblematic of the change happening in size and beauty standards. Bart hopes that signing Miko will begin a similar shift and ignite an important conversation among men. “I want every man in America to say, ‘I can do that’ when they see Zach. The body positive messaging and size diversity is something that’s relevant and something that continues to be on everybody’s mind. We have to extend the conversation for men," Bart told Women's Wear Daily.
Zach Miko is not the first of his kind in being a plus-sized man, but likely to be the first of many men who contribute to the reshaping of beauty standards for men all across the country – and perhaps all across the world.
