DON'T IGNORE IT, BUT DON'T PANIC EITHER

 What is Zika virus?

Zika virus is a Flavivirus transmitted by mosquitoes, similar to dengue, yellow fever and the West Nile virus. It's symptoms include, headaches and rashes, but most infected do not show symptoms. It is especially dangerous for pregnant mothers as it has caused brain damage and defects to many babies throughout South America.

  • The virus is part of the same type and family as West Nile, dengue and yellow fever
  • It is typically spread by the Aedes Mosquito
  • Most people show no symptoms, but for some rashes and headaches are an indicator
  • It has been found everywhere from South America to North America and the Caribbean and even Europe
  • There is currently no vaccine or treatment for it
  • Leaders at the World Health Organization have been quoted as saying it is “spreading explosively” They estimate that they will see 4 million cases throughout North and South America
  • It was actually discovered in the forests of Uganda 70 years ago
  • Zika can cause serious birth defects in babies
  • President Obama has called for rapid research in order to gather statistics and more information about the virus
  • According to the WHO (World Health Organization) and CDC there are confirmed cases in Minnesota, Texas, Hawaii, Florida and Illinois
  • In 2013 according to the WHO an estimated 11% of the French Polynesia was infected

Prevention Suggestions according to the CDC:

  • Use repellent
  • When in areas near mosquitoes, wear long sleeve, cover arms and legs
  • Clear Stagnant water where they breed
