Maria Yuryevna Sharapova was born on April 19, 1987 in Nyagan, Russia SFSR and her current residence is in Bradenton, Florida.

Sharapova is a right-handed woman tennis player, who turned professional at 14-years-old on April 19, 2001. Her highest ranking was on August 22, 2005 as the No. 1 female tennis player in the world, at the age of 18. She has been No. 1 on five separate occasions, adding up to a total of 21 weeks. As of February 29, 2016, Sharapova is currently ranked No. 7 in the world by the Women’s Tennis Association.

She’s an Olympic medalist from the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, when she earned silver for Russia in women’s singles.

She has won 35 single titles and 5 Grand Slam titles, which ranks her third among active players, right behind the Williams sisters. In 2004, she won the Women’s Tennis Association finals and has also won three doubles titles.

Sharapova has been a United Nations Development Programme Goodwill Ambassador for almost 9 years and has been recognized in the "30 Legends of Women's Tennis: Past, Present and Future" by Time magazine and the "100 Greatest of All Time" by Tennis Channel.

She has modeled for Sports Illustrated, Nike, Prince, Canon, and for Cole Haan.

Since she turned pro in 2001, Forbes confirmed that she was the highest paid female athlete for 11 consecutive years.

The most recent award Sharapova has received was last month, February 5, 2016. This was the Order For Merit to the Fatherland, which is the highest Civilian decoration of the Russian Federation.
