Many women like myself can relate to spending hours watching makeup tutorials in order to achieve a symmetrical, blemish free, perfectly carved and sculpted version of ourselves. We strive to achieve perfection through flawlessly chiseling our cheekbones with bronzers and highlighters or over defining our lips to achieve the best pout since Kylie J. But one Youtuber, Shalom Blac, has set herself apart by embracing her flaws and proving her greatest imperfection to be, well, perfection.
Shallom’s most popular video, “The Power of Makeup”, shows half of her face done up with makeup, while the other is bare and exposes severe scarring received from a frying oil incident when she was younger. Unfortunately after the burn incident, Shallom endured bullying while in school telling Buzzfeed magazine:
"Life after the accident wasn't what I thought it would be. I was stared at by kids and older people whenever I stepped out. I felt like a living statue that people came to see."
Shallom turned to makeup to feel better about herself and eventually gained strength and confidence from true self acceptance.
The powerful video has Shallom speaking to her viewers about how important self love is, whether you find it through makeup or within yourself. The act of covering her scars through makeup isn’t what brings her true happiness, but rather its accepting both sides of her face and equally cherishing their beauty.
Makeup fads will come and go, but it’s Shallom’s powerful message that will leave a long lasting impact on her viewers. The soon to be makeup guru currently has 23,000 subscribers on YouTube.
